The programme Building with Nature in practice

The development of adequate design and execution processes for sustainable infrastructure solutions using integration with the natural environment can only be achieved through experimentation and learning in practice. That is why the core of Building with Nature comprises four cases from practice (the South-Western Delta, the Coast of Holland, the Markermeer and IJsselmeer, and Singapore).

Given the objectives of Building with Nature, the selection of these cases is of major importance. In order to ensure that there is a good balance between the cases, they were reviewed in terms of geographical spread, spread between ecosystems (coast, enclosed coastal / estuary system, more tropical coastal system), administrative complexity and opportunities for innovation. In addition, the cases have to be interesting enough from the point of view of knowledge development in the disciplines that are of importance for Building with Nature, namely

  1. the abiotic boundary conditions and processes (hydrodynamics and morphology)
  2. the biotic conditions and processes (water quality and ecology)
  3. decision-making (collaboration, and legislation and regulations) and
  4. the design process.
